THIS NEW YEAR, SEND OUT TALKING EMAIL GREETINGS

Filed Under (Technology) by Rajesh Kumar on 28-12-2006

Imagine the conventional email greetings that we send out this part of the year. This new year consider replacing the text by greetings in your own voice using your computer and a standard PC mic and a free software combo of Audacity and an mp3 converter . It is pretty simple and can be done without much of a pain.Record your greetings in your own voice and export the recording to mp3 format using the software combo mentioned before. Attach and send it by email. Some mail services, such as Gmail even sense that the attachment is an audio mp3 file and directly offer to play it.

I see good potential here to surprise faraway friends whom we may not call, but still may want to wish them in our own voice. Sorry, no voice-merge here!

For Installation help on Audacity here. Fellow blogger Amit Agarwal of Digital Inspiration has written a very useful post on voice recording using such software and I recommend all readers to spend a minute on very tips provided by Amit.

SLIDESHOWS ADD VALUE TO YOUR SITE, TRY ZOHO

Filed Under (Business, Technology) by Rajesh Kumar on 27-12-2006

Of late I have come across professionals who want to add slideshow onto their blogs or business websites.Zoho provides an interesting feature which allows you to embed slideshow onto your website or blog in just a few steps. If you use your desktop to make slides, Zoho Show works fairly well. However, it also allows you to create presentations from scratch using its own online interface, as well as embed them to your blog or website such as one shown below.

Steps to embed a ppt onto a blog like this are very simple.
A. Signup for Zoho Show.
B. Upload your slides or create your presentation online
C. Once done, click on ‘action’, you would see a menu bar like shown below

D. Once you have clicked on and see the some code, copy it completely.
E. If you want to add to a blog like this, do write your blog in the text editor and then click on the Edit Html button above. Paste the Zoho code at the place where you want your slideshow to appear.Publish and your are up.
It may appear complex, but it is easy as cheese. Zoho Show bills itself as an online tool to create, edit, publish, and show presentations. So if you are a marketing professional who wants to run a slideshow for prospects, you may like to try this out.
On the flipside, you might find that animation effects on your slides are knocked out, and watch out for the change in the slide background.

Slideshare offers eponymous services, but in my judgement Zoho wins hands down. One, Zoho allows you to keen your slides private. Two, it has its own online slide-editor with obvious advantages.Slideshare however scores in retaining the template background. If you do not have a blog and still want to share a presentation, Zoho Show allows that too.Caution: Resign to the fact that once you have uploaded your slides, you cannot have them back on your machine, so keeping a copy is immensely sensible.

FINALLY, BLOGGER IS OUT OF BETA

Filed Under (Technology) by Rajesh Kumar on 20-12-2006

Google today announced that its popular blog platform Blogger is moved out of Beta. It is been called as New Blogger. Of late, Google has been rapidly migrating blogs on Blogger to Blogger Beta, which is now been called as ‘New Blogger’. The ‘New Blogger’ has some nice features but the migration for many users like me have not been without trouble. The timezone was reset and in case of my Hindi blog, the language was changed back to English. But nevertheless, some nice features. I suppose the feeds location changes too, though for few days Google would redirect your readers to the new feed location.Next few days would be worth the watch in blogosphere.Pour in your reactions.

AFTER LAPTOPS, NOW DESKTOPS ON FIRE!

Filed Under (Technology) by Rajesh Kumar on 19-12-2006

A Computerworld story recounts how NEC desktops, atleast two two of them, set themselves ablaze in Japan this Oct and Nov.While this is something to be concerned about, the story does not mention the environment in which these desktops were being used, and whether any user action was responsible for this. Thankfully, NEC is not a major name in Desktop business. Look at the cheek, they have quickly mentioned that the faulty components were not made by NEC, but outsourced!

GOOGLE NASA TIEUP:WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Filed Under (Technology) by Rajesh Kumar on 19-12-2006

Google seems heading deep in space with its tieup with Nasa.Google will be able to make previously unavailable pitcures from Nasa’s library to its consumers and Nasa would be able to leverage GOOG’s huge computing facilities and expertise in this area. Nasa will provide high quality pictures of Moon and Mars, as well as that of the international space station.Sounds like a win-win for the space enthusiasts.

WEB 2.0: 'TIME' NAMES 'YOU' AS PERSON OF THE YEAR

Filed Under (Business, Technology) by Rajesh Kumar on 18-12-2006

In 1982 Time rated PC is the person of the year. That was the hardware bit in the computing business getting recognized. Things have indeed moved forward and the focus is now on the net and PC is on the sidelines, enabling things as they happen. The focus is on content.Web enthusiasts have been using newer platforms(are they really new indeed?) such as blogs, mashups etc self expression and have felt good about it. Now Time magazine has announced that the Person of the Year 2006 is ‘You’, crediting the users for enriching web with their content and for having great influence on vox-populi. This is mainstream recognition that Web 2.0 has arrived. This should also silence critics who have often spoken of Web 2.0 as a geeks’ hype.
BTW, here’s an interesting wiki on Time’s Person of the Year here.

MICROSOFT TO ATTRACT TALENT DIFFERENTLY, DIFFERENTLY FROM GOOGLE

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Rajesh Kumar on 16-12-2006

After Google attracted considerable flak in blogosphere over its vague stance on its Google Wordmasters Challenge contest results, others have thankfully decided to do things differently.
Microsoft has recently announced
Web Rockstars contest ( for web designers and developers). In contrast to Google Wordmasters Challenge event, things are a little different here. Rules and regulations are known to potential participants and so are the prizes. 10 winners get XBox 360s and an unspecified number get to travel to MSFT’s Redmond Campus. Results will be declared on 31st Jan and possibly you may not even need to send your SAE to them to know the results.

CALLING MARKETING, RSS ON YOUR WEBSITE IS GOOD ROI

Filed Under (Business) by Rajesh Kumar on 13-12-2006

A website is supposed to be the webmasters baby, isn’t it? Not quite true. This post is for Marketing professionals. Ever noticed the below icon on any website of late?
Subscribe to this feed

We are going to talk about it.
Modern day communication is characterized by short attention span and over exposure to diverse communication sources and cues.

It is perhaps too much to expect all people interesting in your company as an investor, analyst, career seeker, media person to get to know the updates on your corporate website site as they happen. They need to come and check as often as they can, on which, apply your judgement. Email again is an active response item, which means someone has to revert as soon as they can, and this can be very repetitive and prone to errors.

As a company, you would be interested in making sure the right media guys do not miss out your all important press release, a potential talent does not join the rival because he did not have the time to go through all the career openings in the careers section of your website and the Wall Street & Dalal Street analysts read your statement before the stock exchange bell rings. Each of these categories, esp. the analysts and the media may be interested in 100 or more companies and tracking all companies at the same time is easily prone to omissions.

Make it easy for them.Adopt RSS feeds. The acronym RSS goes by various expansions, the easy to understand one and widely popular is Really Simple Syndication. This represents an accepted XML format by which information is understood by various aggregation tools. As a user, we have the choice of using a web based feed aggregator such as Google Reader, Bloglines etc or a desktop one such as RSSReader. These feed aggregators keep sniffing the sites you subscribed to for updates and bring it to you as soon as there is one, saving you the pain of going to each and every site you are interested in. Rather ,let them look for following icons on your site which signify that an RSS feed is available.

This is a widely accepted practice in blogosphere. It is widely used by magazines and newspapers across the world. I checked the website of Fortune 10 (not Global 10) companies to see how they are leveraging RSS and the observations are interesting.

The below picture from IBM.com is self explanatory on the importance provided by IBM to the RSS feeds (It leads you to a page where it lists out different feeds, targeted to different users.

See the RSS icon in the press section of Chevron website

GE has a very interesting combination of RSS and podcast feeds

Walmartfacts.com (Info website of Walmart)

RSS feeds list(Remember the Prof who taught you STP of marketing, well now observe how the feeds are segmented)

RSS is a must-to-have in today’s environment. Why?
  • Your investors sit across the world and you need their attention.
  • Your customers/prospects do not have the time to sift through mounds of Megabytes to look for what they want.
  • You want to hire the best, who are wooed by many others.
  • You are watched by media around the world and you need their attention.
  • You are an important enough name to be in the to-read list of college going kids.

    So, what is my point?

I looked up several Indian leading companies. Sadly, Indian companies are lagging(Except for the newspaper sites) behind their counterparts in the west in Web 2.0 era. It is important to:

    1. Build RSS feeds on corporate website.
    2. Should be done segment wise for best results.

  • By stepping forward on this RSS journey, you would be enabling your information consumers in a small way.And trust me, it would pay you back your every cent.

WAL-MART JOINS INDIAN RETAIL REVOLUTION

Filed Under (Business) by Rajesh Kumar on 08-12-2006

Wal-Mart, world’s largest retailer(turnover USD 315 BN, Mcap USD 193 BN and employing employing 1.3 MN people in US) recently moved a step forward to enter India.
According to a Confederation of Indian Industry report, there are 5.5 outlets per 1000 Indians, which is the highest in the world(Figure that out for a billion Indians!). It speaks volumes about the size of these outlets and their capacity to offer the best to their customers. It also means that distribution costs are very high for companies retailing via these shops. Last few years of GDP growth rate in the range of 8% means that there is much higher attraction in entering this market (Infact, it is nudging 9% levels now). Indians are shopping than ever before. The Indian shopping season, which centers around Diwali, was a record for cellphone industry this Diwali as estimated one million phones are reported to have been sold on one single day!(Market leader reportedly Nokia sold over 4,00,000 phones on Oct 19).
The interest among the business houses towards retail is understandable. There is aleady a move towards large format stores and malls which are emerging in major Indian cities. There are several chains of stores in the apparel and grocery business already such as Lifestyle, Shopper Stop, Spencers etc. Then there are players such as Viveks in the electronics business.
Recently, players such as leading Indian business houses such as Reliance have entered the retail business. Reliance already has several stores in Hyderabad, a city which it has decided to pilot. There is still cap on the proportion of money that foreign businesses can invest(percentage of a venture) in India. To get around this restriction, Wal-Mart recently tied up with a leading Indian business house Bharti lead by its highly respected CEO, Sunil Bharti Mittal. Mittal runs one of India’s largest mobile companies(Or it is the largest?).

So what changes? Do the small retailers vanish overnight? Does the customers start benefiting instantly? I would say no. McDonald’s did not change Indian food habits. On the other hand, McDonald’s changed its menu over a period of time to introduce items on the menu that draws from Indian cooking. Even after a decade of entering India, it has a handful of outlets in just a few cities and still servces to a niche segment. And secondly, India has over 700 towns. A Wal-Mart store in every such town does not look like an instant reality.Perhaps in the larger metroes, it may be a good alternative.
And then, there is the question of buying behaviour. Many Indians like me, have a lontime relationship with a neighbourhood grocer who delivers stuff on a phonecall. It is too pampered a habit to change easily.(Agreed, Wal-Mart is not grocery shop alone)
Unarguably, Wal-Mart’s scale of operations would bring in supply chain efficiencies which they can pass on to the customers. There is very high buzz in industry circles on this retail thing, which is a paradigm shift from the past when every business house wanted to be in manufacturing or services area. Needless to say, these days nothing seems to excite our business houses than retail. And the customer is watching, waiting to be wooed!
